The 'copper or 'taiche', made of cast iron, was used in sugar factories and rum distilleries to boil the sugar juice and evaporate off the water. the concentrated juice was either used to make sugar or fermented and distilled as rum. the repeated heating and cooling would eventually weaken the metal and cause it to crack, as these have...Grenada once had more than 100 sugar factories, so that makes for a lot of old coppers, now highly prized as garden ornaments....
